Why do some people send the answers to your questions via PM instead of posting them on the thread?

I find it really strange. I could understand if the questions were risque, but something really mundane? Weird, really weird.

I do it when I want to give someone an answer discreetly, either because I don't want to get involved in the public discussion/flamewar, or because I think it might embarrass them to just post it for everyone to see.
