Should you be free to choose a name for your child ... ?

http://www.newsweek.com/georgia-baby-name-allah-sue-aclu-lawsuit-575277

The parents of a 22-month-old girl, who remains without a surname, are suing the state of Georgia for the right to give her the last name Allah.

Elizabeth Handy and Bilal Walk gave their daughter the name ZalyKha Graceful Lorraina Allah when she was born in Atlanta in May 2015. But the Georgia Department of Public Health refused to issue a birth certificate on the grounds that it violates a Georgia code stating that a baby’s surname must be either that of the father or the mother for the purpose of the birth certificate, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

After growing frustrated during nearly two years of battles with the state, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed a lawsuit last week against the Georgia Department of Public Health. The suit alleges that the refusal to issue the toddler a birth certificate means the parents have been unable to obtain for her a social security number, medical coverage under Medicaid, food stamps or to enroll her in school.

So, they are on Medicaid and food stamps, and yet they have the means to pursue a frivolous lawsuit for over two years. Must be nice. 🙄

@theoneyouwerewarnedabout: Yep, same here. "Refugees" and illegals live better than half the honest population.

@AbbeyRhode: Medicaid is Obamacare. It is the law that all children be covered by insurance. However, food stamps are not required (not that getting FS automatically makes someone a deadbeat). What got me was the school thing....who puts a 22-month old child in school?
err. I put this reply on a different Q .
SW glitch.. But it's true.. Very funny.
Escape war torn Syria.. But make it a holiday destination 😃👍
I don't agree with that.. there's a few names that you aren't aloud to name your child.. which I never knew this was the case until I read an article about it.

I'm guessing the authorities saw it as inflammatory rather than just bad taste.
I read somewhere about being illegal to name your kid hiltler.. Bad taste of course but seems like an over reach of the state.. 🤔

I read that too.
Couldn't get much worse!

quite why you'd want to do such a dumb thing and mark the poor kid out for abuse her whole life is beyond me.
assuming of course the story is true.

Good point.
Even thought the story is in several publications who knows what is true these days :(

The U.S has a President who coined the phrase 'Fake News'. And has two great spin doctors in Spicer and Conway
They can always move their asses to a country that will allow it!
