Killing someone is still ending a life. Knowing you are going to die on a specific date for your crime is indeed punishment. Sitting on a tiny cell 23 hours a day with no real human contact, it's punishment
Isolation like that for years can drive many to the point of insanity . It may just be a needle to you, but to the person receiving it, it is much more than that. Even if they deserve it.
