People of considerable means, Do you help your family and friends that have a lot less money than you?

I have family members and friends with family members that are quite wealthy. I wonder why they don't help their families. Is it because they didnt earn it? I have heard it said that giving money to a person who is wasteful by nature is like pouring sand into their hands.

I have friends and family that have VERY considerable means. Never once have they lifted a finger to help us, it's always the ones who are struggling themselves. (We have a family of 7 and lost all income due to my husband's illness.) It's strange. I can't wait to get back on our feet so that we can help others again!
