I accidentally went to gary Indiana on the way home from the Chicago trip

We needed gas when we entered Indiana and went to a random exit that advertised gas. We got gas and my partner spotted a subway and wanted to stop in. We go in and the counter was behind heavy bulletproof glass. I'm thinking ok it's daylight and that's usually a sign of a rougher area. After eating lunch I see on the receipt it says we are in gary, indiana. I show her and say this isn't a place we want to be when the sunsets. Ive heard of the place but never knew I'd stumble into it.

I didn't feel unsafe and the area didn't look bad. I'm not sure.
