Wealth and power can definitely influence the outcome of laws as they are applied. Access to counsel, experts, etc. are all easier with funds to pay, as is the quality of expert that can be retained. Contrast that with a public defender who is overworked, underpaid, and doesn't take the same level of interest, and who does not have the same access to additional resources, and the outcome will be different than for the highly skilled counsel. Public defenders may tend to encourage a plea deal whereas someone highly skilled may even be able to prevent charges being filed in the first place.
