In this day and age we should not have any kind of shortage

Well, actually the latest business fad is just in time inventory, in other words, getting all the part at the perfect time so that you have little to no inventory, therefore you don't have to buy space for the inventory or people to manage a wearhouse.
When it works properly, it saves a lot of money... But if one thing is off, then suddenly you got a backup or delay or shortage.
But to the point of "this day and age", we're a lot more likely to have a shortage in today's management just in time inventory than we were before it became popular a decade or two ago.
Also, if you're talking about the baby formula, I also wonder if a monopoly comes into play...
Because so few companies do it, that they caught one lying and being involved in a cover up, that when they put the pause button on that one factory, the others couldn't keep up.
The same happened with air bags, as there are basically only three companies world wide that make airbags and when one had a screw up, recall and then the other two couldn't keep up with the demand.

@wildbill83 Aren’t shipments coming from Europe now, many on US military aircraft? But the problem is the “ unelected” bureaucrats in given bureaucracies that fuck things up with their tons and tons of nonsensical rules and regulations that from the FDA to the EPA that shaft the American people. And no doubt these bureaucrats are in dire fear of the administration and do their bidding even if it’s illegal or detrimental to the people.

i.e. in their infinite wisdom, they think it's better to completely destroy something that the country is in dire need of rather than have the shipper/producer email some labels to print...

I'm expecting it to get worse. I'm trying to keep a months worth of pet food on hand and we are stocking up on basics. Too many things seem to be right on the verge of "breaking".
