Is 'beat it about the bush' the Americanisation of the phrase? As it's always been 'beat about the bush' to me. It's an ironic version of the saying unless that's what you're doing here.

We say "don't beat around the bush".
To "beat IT around the bush sounds lije cruelty or lewdness".
