@SWKing: It's odd how many thoughts you can have in a split second. I was getting into my car. Turn the key and go? Open the door and bail out? Grab the gun? No, no, and no. I went to a nearby hotel and had them call 911. The police station was a few blocks away, but it took the cops 20 minutes to get there, and they were jerks. Kept calling me by my last name. They had no interest in anything but filling out a form. I had a call from a victims assistance organization a few days later and I told them the mugger was more polite than the cops. I was asked if I wanted to file a complaint. I said I knew better than to mess with cops in this city. That was the end of that.

Yes, a long time ago when we broke down and knocked on a door in the middle of nowhere to use the phone.
