Did anybody receive a 1099G document letter from unemployment benefits?

I know I got unemployment and collecting until I got a job. I just got this message from them and it said that if you collect unemployment during 2021 or whatever I have to file taxes? Great now I’m stressing! If I don’t do it, I’m going to be in so much trouble and I’ll have a penalty. I thought this unemployment shit was over. The benefits ended September 2021.

Unless you have a complicated tax/income situation you can use a free service like Turbo Tax online. You probably owe unless tax was automatically withheld from your UI check in the first place. If you do own and can't pay it all right away you can set up a payment plan and get hit with a small interest fee. Take care of it now because blowing it off will result in far more stress than you are having now.

You've got to report it when filing. You may not have to pay any tax on it. No need to stress.

@ElizabethBabe1994 You're not going to jail! The IRS seldom jails people. I've had run ins with the IRS. All they want is their money. Can't pay? They do have payment programs. Never EVER entertain any phone calls claiming to be from the IRS. Those are scams. The IRS sends out letters. Just pay them and they'll go away. NO jail for you.
