If the conductor has done his job well in rehearsal (s)he's not even needed on stage. Just there to throw his(her) arms around & have a good time. ????

@dark548 I've only once ever seen a conductor manage to force a change of pace on an ensemble. That was in rehearsal and it wasn't elegant. You wouldn't want to do it in front of an audience.
