A friend of mine just got out of the hospital. He went on the Keto last winter. He has now developed calcification of the kidney and a huge kidney stone. They had to do surgery and may have to go in again. There could be other things at work here but: He had no signs of kidney problems before going on the diet.

His Drs. told him to get off of it. Kidney damage is a known problem with that diet.

@bowman81 keto demands lots of water . Its fats and proteins , not calcium . I have seen lots of folks get on it and lose weight . A consult with your doc before any diet is a good idea

@TexChik He lost weight but ended up in hospital. Drs. told him it was not unusual. I am of the opinion that everything in moderation is the only safe way. Eat less and exercise more. We didn't put that weight on all at once, taking it off in a hurry can be dangerous.

The first thing that popped up on a search for kidney problems with Keto:

"Causes of Kidney Pain on Keto Diet

Acidic urine. Diets that are very high in animal protein and low in carbs can increase the odds of developing kidney stones because they can raise the amount of acid ...
High oxalate levels. Nuts are naturally high in oxalate, which have been associated with calcium-oxalate kidney stones. ..."
