Your monarchy is overdue for a dismantling. Save the UK taxpayers a lot of money.

@SW-User I agree but that brain cell dodger was happy to use it as a step up her career ladder.
@SW-User I bet they bring in more money than they take out - plus, without them... who else is going to foot the bill for the maintenance and repairs to the castles that they vacate??? 🤷‍♀️

@HootyTheNightOwl Tourists visit the houses, castles etc.
They've been there for 100s of years!
@Harriet03 I doubt that would be enough to maintain and insure them at their current levels, much less play Whack-a-mole when stuff starts to happen.

Look at the carry on over the fire at Windsor. Nobody wanted to pay towards repairs then - and left totally empty and unguarded overnight, they'll look attractive to burglars and homeless people alike.

@HootyTheNightOwl France does very nicely with tourists visiting their royal residences.
@Harriet03 France also has more to tempt passing tourists with, too... their weather is better than ours for a start.

They also aren't an island nation like we are. If you don't like Paree, you can easily hop a train to another country.
Harriet03 · 41-45, F
@HootyTheNightOwl We used to be able to do that.
Friends and I every 6 weeks would hop on a train & have lunch in Brussels or Bruges.

@Harriet03 Someone has to own the castles so tourists can visit them, I doubt if the National Trust or English Heritage etc could afford the billions that those properties would no doubt cost, given their significance.
Harriet03 · 41-45, F
@BeerMonster There supposed to belong to the nation.
@BeerMonster See, that's what I've been trying to say. Without the monarch and the security details in place - you might as well publish a floor plan in the newspaper and put an X on the spot.

Tourism alone isn't going to foot the bill for those places and will most likely sink some of the other stately homes protected by charities.

They can't even open the door during lockdown, so they are just money pits right now... all of them, from Buckingham Palace down.

@Harriet03 Windsor is owned by the monarchy, I assume the same goes for Balmoral and other residences.
BeerMonster · 51-55, M
@HootyTheNightOwl Exactly. The monarchy, however outdated and uninteresting they might be to most UK citizens, are more important to the nation than most people could imagine.
Harriet03 · 41-45, F
@BeerMonster Windsor is owned by the Crown estates office. Which is a supposed joint venture.
Guess which partner picks up the bills?
@BeerMonster Balmoral and Sandringham are the two privately owned by the monarch... technically, the tax payer should have paid at least part towards the repairs to Windsor instead of turning their back on the responsibility that we have for its upkeep.
