Well, their defense was that you can't impeach a president after he's left office. And tbh, that's actually not too bad of a reasoning. However, this wouldn't have happened had they impeached him on the right thing the first time around. They could have nailed him on violations of the Emoluments Clause easy peasy, but they instead went after him for the Russia-Gate nonsense.
