When you confront your old man about his toxic behaviour over the decades, and he goes into detail about the midlife crisis he was going through and

Yes. Be thankful that he said as much as he did.
No need to press him any further. All that can come from further pressing is estrangement.
No one is perfect and there is no user manual as to how to get through life.

From some people, yes. Mine didn't admit but he changed his behaviour once I called him out on it.
