It wasn't 'too' long after schools became non-segregated so the racial tensions were still fresh in that realm. AIDS became a horrible thing during that decade. Crack became a horrible thing during that decade. Gang violence seemed to take off more so. Reagan was an idiot for getting rid of mental health institutions with nowhere really for those folks to go, so jails became more of the place they got sent to. The Berlin Wall was torn down. MTV was awesome as they played music instead of all the other stuff they changed to. Headbangers Ball was one of my favorites on MTV. L.L. Cool J was the shiznit as well. Many music artists still carrying on into the 80's and beyond, with many new ones becoming. Then, it turned into artists promoting other artists for their 5 minutes (not 15) of fame then they're out. So here we are now.

btw, #45 stole Reagan's "Make America Great" slogan.

As for music in that decade... it seemed "weird" and in the midst of a major change.

Jails and the streets. That’s when the problems with homeless mentally ill really intensified. 🙁

@bijouxbroussard Yes, I thought about that after I posted my comment... unto the streets

@bijouxbroussard Not that some mental health institutions were all that great, however

@WICKED True. In my state (California) Reagan privatized some of the better public hospitals while he was governor. Doctors had been sending their most “difficult” patients here from all over the country because of their good reputation. But once they were no longer classified as “public” (state-funded) those patients who were uninsured and/or couldn’t afford the fees were sent to halfway houses or simply released.

@bijouxbroussard Why do you think people are against Universal Income and Healthcare?
@WICKED Honestly, I think that on one hand people in the U.S. have learned to be terrified of anything they imagine might be “socialist”. Unfortunately, many of those same people don’t really know what the word means. Universal Healthcare wouldn’t necessarily be any different than public schools or access to services like the police or fire department. It probably could be achieved by extending Medicare to a broader percentage of the population. Taxes would cover the program, the same way they do schools and other essential services.

Universal Income is a different matter. A lot of people worry that those who don’t really need it would take advantage, the same way they worry about welfare fraud. Ironically these same people don’t seem to have a problem with corporate-style “welfare” fraud. Our current president all but bragged during his initial campaign that he was a tax cheat. And the recent delayed release of his tax records seem to bear that out. People who talk about “welfare queens” (another of Reagan’s thinly coded terms) were actually proud of Trump’s deceit. That they see as him “beating the system”. Go figure. 😳

@bijouxbroussard Many complain about the 'quality' of public schools. Some claim "taxation is theft." (all of it). Some claim extending Medicare to All is the same as giving a "hand out" just as some claim the same about the welfare realm. They don't see it as a hand UP, just "out."

In the Social Darwinistic view of the some, they want the less fortunate and the vulnerable to die off. So they can save Their own money to not have to provide for others who are not the same as them.

Low and behold, one day, they can and will have health issues, become disabled in some way, become an older adult that employers don't want to hire, etc etc etc....
@WICKED True, that. The consistent thing about social conservatives is a strong lack of empathy. I don’t think it occurs to them that they ever could be in such dire straits—until they are. 🙁

@bijouxbroussard And I've heard drug dealers saying "it's all about beating The Man"
@WICKED Sure, but they’re considered criminals—unless they work for pharmaceutical companies. 😉

@bijouxbroussard There has been crack down regarding how prescription meds are offered and regulated for patients. Maybe not in All areas, but there has been in mine.
