in strict, technical terms initials are supposed to be terminated with periods to show that you're shortening to just initials. e.g. J.G. would be most correct. in informal situations, it's pretty common to drop the periods and often the capitalization as well to something like JG or jg.

@dirge Thanks a lot, because that's where the confusion is...between having the periods and not having them. Many examples (logo design) online drop the periods.
