Tell me about it. Right before Christmas (which spoiled my holiday) I was sent a letter that told me my apartment wasn't being renewed at the end of the lease period. No other explanation. I had to chase the office manager down (she was never in) and I finally got her from her car phone on New Year's Eve. That was when she told me "It's not you" and I got some song and dance story about how they were going to rennovate and remodel the building, starting with the basement apartment (which is where I lived for nine years). When I asked why she didn't explain herself, she said, "I don't have to".

Anyway, I had five months to find another place. In the nine years I had been safe and secure, the renting world had changed. Every place was out of my price range or, if it wasn't, they wanted twice the amount of rent in the bank PLUS the first month's payment PLUS a security deposit. I didn't have all this. I was living from disability payment check to disability payment check.

I don't know where you reside, but these are the general rules for Chicagoland and the surrounding suburban area. I finally found a place in suburban Oak Park, which wanted the same thing as everybody else. With the help of my one brother, we were able to secure me a place, while they checked my rental on-time payment and my credit record. All were clear, and the realator let me have it for those reasons.

How is your rental payment? On time? How about a credit check? Do you owe everybody and his sister? What about the neighborhood? Are you a good neighbor to whoever already lives around you? Or are there outstanding complaints?

Potential renters are going to check everything. And I mean everything. Make sure you don't have anything that will come back to bite you hard out there.

The good apartments have a waiting list for obvious reasons. The only reason a bad apartment has a waiting list is because the owners are too lazy to process the paperwork, or it's dirt cheap.

@raysam363 I'd prefer a good rated one but if I have to go bottom of the barrel I will
