Is it possible to survive getting hit with a hammer without dieing or major damage?

Yes, my brother was hit in the head with a short sledgehammer when he was a teen
....he lifted up the hammer and hit himself on the head, causing him to fall to his knees.
He was dazed and groggy but, not only did he survive....he became a doctor.

The most common place to be hit by a hammer is on the opposite hand to the one holding the hammer....which might hurt, but I’ve never heard of it being lethal.
