What are the conservatives trying to conserve?

It is more of a general idea that they like to maintain the status quo and even old traditions and social arrangements rather than to be progressive. However there have been times when folks considered conservative would privatize that which was in public or communal domains as in the movement to enclose the commons which took place in much of Europe between 1200 and 1600.

@ClanNaFiacaillApWythe Where I take issue with many so-called Conservatives is their innate belief that whatever they accumulate belongs solely to them and that the less fortunate don't deserve any help because they "didn't earn it". As members of any "community" isn't it morally right to help the less fortunate, and I don't mean the lazy ones, I mean the mentally and physically disabled and the mistreated. Even most animal flocks or packs care for their wounded or elderly until they die...

@spjennifer Well there is also the element of being individualistic versus being collectivist or communal. Some conservatives do have a sense of family even of extended family.
