I don't know because people generally won't tell you why. But there was one young woman on EP who blocked me immediately after asking a question about personal debts and I replied that I had no credit cards, no car payments and had paid the house off and I pay for things as I go, if I don't have the $$$ I don't buy something I want and can live without. I guess it made her mad.

Well good for you Patti. I don't have a credit card either and never did. I don't have any car or house payments either. My car is not new or fancy but functional and reliable. My cellphone is a Nokia C1. I have no debt right now though. That's the plus side. :-)

@Wraithorn: When I was raising my daughter and was a single mother I had headaches about once a month because it was hard to stretch the paychecks after paying bills, got a small amount of child support and if it wasn't for that we would have had to have gone on Food Stamps to buy groceries. So I had to cut back where ever I could. I didn't buy things I could live without like fancy brands of clothing, jewelry, entertainment and spend a lot of weekends going to yard sales to buy functional items that I needed. Meals were homemade from scratch and getting anything from a restaurant was a rare treat for us. I bought older cars and got by with only putting liability insurance & uninsured motorist insurance on them, saved enough money by not buying a car on credit (and for the insurance and interest) to pay for my next car. I got criticized for it by my sister, who couldn't mind her own business. So if anyone wants to resent me for the fact that I am not in debt I say they can walk in my shoes for awhile because it was never easy living that way.

@cherokeepatti: I can relate to that and my mother would relate even more. She had to raise 3 sons after being a housewife until her divorce. She had no work experience and no degree. She had dedicated her life to her husband and children from a young age. The amount of child support she received for us was laughable. She did use things like food stamps. You and her could have a long chat about that kind of thing. You deserve a medal.
I told my step mother this just yesterday too. Interestingly my father left her with two children also and does not pay any child support whatsoever. He also left her with huge debt and stuck in another country, Scotland. She did what she needed to do while burying her pride for the sake of her children. She also used food stamps.
Here is a shockingly interesting thing. She , my step mother , is one year older than me. My half brother and sister are 20 and 18 yrs old.
And now !!! My subconscious mind has inserted a quote into
my conscious mind and it instructs me to give it to you. I also sent this to my mother and stepmother before because they needed and deserved it just like you do Patti. Many men who read this will have an issue with me. I don't care. It obviously does not apply to all men. :-)
I suspect you already know the author. He is a fellow countryman of yours even though he now lives in Germany.
“Men can have an obvious display of heroics or strength or accomplishment, but it is the unsung women throughout all ages of humankind who have endured with superlative strength, beauty and love, often with secret suffering, that deserve absolute respect and acknowledgement. They are the true heroes of humanity. They are the champions who have birthed and nurtured us, who have held us together at the most integral level, when men seemed intent only on tearing apart the fabric of life for irrelevant ideals.”
