Why do some people act like being in your forties or fifties is ancient?

I saw a question here recently from a woman asking what there was to look forward to after she reached 40. I was like seriously?
I don't know if anyone else watches the TV show Survivor, but there was a guy on there who was 52 years old and the doctor had to treat him for heat exhaustion and he was yelling something like, "Doctor Joe brought this old pirate back from the dead!" Dude! You are 52, not 82. That guy still has a good 30 years left on him yet!
Am I missing something here? Do people sign up for the retirement home once they hit 40?

Have exercised my entire life. Take care of my 6 acres, cut wood, take down trees and do whatever comes along that interests me. Probably considered ancient by some, but not many ancient guys can still lift 350lbs for fun. I'll let you know when I get old.

@Meowsolini: my hats off to your mother.
@whatalife68: I second that! What an amazing woman!

Not that I am aware of. I turned 46 last month and I am in very good health. I look much younger than I am. Some it that is good genes, but I believe the rest is because I take care of myself. My mom turns 71 next month and chops and hauls wood on her farm like it's nothing! You are only old if you believe that you are!

Definitely agreed!
I'm hoping that I have good genes. My grandpa is 91 years old and still rides his bike and swims in his pool every day.
I hope that ends up being me! 😀

@NineLives: That is just fantastic!!! Way to go grandpa!!!
I'm 49 and don't consider myself old just yet. Sure, I may not move as fast as I used to, and some of my joints ocassionally click or stiffen, but I'm still flexible and I'm still vibrant and juicy. 😉

Well thank God, there is another woman on here that doesn't just lay down and act like life ends after the mid-life hump! 👍

I am 57 and I really feel great - I am in as good shape as ever...knocks on wood - I like to stay current with modern music, technology and culture...
NineLives · 41-45, F
That is what keeps you young! 🙂

I agree

Some people don't think well.. it confuses them.

I'm probably the same as the lady , once I hit 35 I'll start thinking of myself as an "old lady" . that is if I even make it to that age lmfao
LovelyGorilla · 22-25, F
Lolll congrattss and I didn't mean it that way 🤔 its. Kind of a weird thing that probably makes no sense but if its someone else I don't really care if they're considered old or young. Its just for me, I feel like I'll be old by that age ....that made no sense 😅idk how to word it
@NineLives: Congratulations!

If it's any consolation , when I was your age I thought I would never see 35. Now 35 is a young chick

No.. but our culture is youth oriented... so there is a certain amount of ageism... (certainly in the workplace).
