Or do you lean more towards the FAL or G3 style? Maybe M1A?

AR, more parts/accessories availability, lighter weight, and more accurate. pretty much any run of the mill AR shoots sub moa these days, whereas even the best forged receiver AK is 1-2 moa at best
also have HK91 (semi/civilian version of G3), but parts are expensive, and it's comparatively heavy (definitely don't wanna carry it far /w optics on it); it is accurate though

Also, HK's are expensive as hell, especially these days; I got mine for deal through a security company years ago, but an average starting price these days is about $3000
PTR makes good G3 clones (they even use original HK tooling), and they've expanded their inventory/sales in recent years, so that would be the way to go if you really want one. They also have the benefit of being about half the price of an HK and have modern amenities like weaver rails (HK's are all pre ban rifles, thank Clinton for that...) & most parts are interchangeable between HK & PTR
