@traceavery Letter writing worked primarily because there was no internet. There was no "instant message" or text.
People also used to go off to sea or to other countries, their family and friends wouldn't hear from them for YEARS. You had no idea if people were alive or dead, this was what made getting a letter so exciting. Plus, they often took weeks to be delivered. "It seems we're expecting" By the time you got this news the kid was already born.
