Has anyone here worked with opal stones?

I'm looking to make some stud earrings with some white opal stones but I cant find anyone who's worked with them! 😱

Any advice will be helpful relating to this :)

They are fragile stones. Plan on using cabochons and setting them inside bezeled settings to protect the edges. A simple dab of jewelers glue and, holding the stone carefully and gently in tweezers, drop onto the bezel. You have to be very careful if you wish to tighten the bezel. Gentle and they can still crack if they are flawed, and many are.

@4meAndyou ah okay, thank you this is very helpful! I love opal but I'm worried about working with them for the first time. I can get premade studs that are already beveled on the edges etc :) . So that's helpful at least :)

@4meAndyou I'll take a look! I'm still wondering if I can bake clay with opal set into it 🤔 oven bake clay it's at a very low temperature

@Silentangel Rio Grande carries silver and gold and copper clay, but I believe they have to be fired in a small kiln. I didn't actually do it myself, but I almost took a class in it. A very small kiln might be a good investment anyway. Not only can you bake silver and gold clay, but you can create your own enamel jewelry.

@4meAndyou that is true it's nice to find another crafter here! :D
they are very fragile, and come out of jewelry very easily. i don’t work with them but have had jewelry with them.

You should go on Etsy and ask on the forums there.
