It wasn’t before. There were several tribes of indigenous people living here before the Europeans even knew the Americas existed

@bijouxbroussard but we dont speak about that. Manifest destiny, excused that genocide.

@bijouxbroussard Depending on which DNA theories you listen to, some of those indigenous people might have descended from Northern Europeans who migrated to the East Coast during the Ice Age, similar to the Asia migration to the West Coast.

@bijouxbroussard yeah...dont get me started on ole chris.
@ChipmunkErnie I don’t trust that. I think it’s one of those revisionist theories brought about to justify what was done here to the Native Americans.

@bijouxbroussard One of the Indian tribes also claims to have Jewish blood -- there was talk of DNA testing but no idea if it was ever done. And you don't "trust" DNA? Or does the possibility that Europeans might have been here the same time as Asians mean you have to give up preconceptions?
Carla · 61-69, F
@bijouxbroussard how many millinia ago would that have been? I can go back too. We all come from the same one celled organism.
@ChipmunkErnie No, I don’t completely trust it as it’s evolving and it wouldn’t be the first time the narrative changed to support a political agenda. Do you remember how Neanderthals were theorized to be primitive brutes until DNA testing indicated that many Europeans possessed it ? And don’t get me started on all the groups trying to refute the idea of everyone being descended from a single woman in Africa. It’s less my preconceived ideas than my understanding of human biases—even in the scientific world. And speaking of Jewish tribes, you’re familiar with the Falashas of Ethiopia ?
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
@bijouxbroussard Actually, no -- that concept of Neanderthals was discredited LONG before DNA became a big thing and was based on a single skeleton which was wracked with arthritis, if I remember correctly. Subsequent fossil finds changed the whole "brute" concept, not the DNA. The only thing DNA research has done is to confirm that Neanderthals (and other human species) were able to interbreed with Homo Sapiens and so they didn't so much become extinct as absorbed into the modern human.
@ChipmunkErnie And as soon as Neanderthal DNA was found within European profiles to a larger extent than some other groups, it became the thing to have. You should check out the popular testing kits, many offer to find that as well.

@bijouxbroussard Which is totally irrelevant to the discussion.
@ChipmunkErnie Sigh. Not trying to argue with you. 🤷🏽‍♀️
