@approachingmyexpirationdate ophtalmology is a medical specialization, they have finished 6 years of medicine and then they can choose to take it, while dentistry is on a completely different department, different lessons, 5 years of education.

@SW-User @HannibalAteMeOut that's like saying a podiatrist isn't a doctor because he doesn't do heart transplants.

they work on different body parts and have to study long enough to take care of the part of the body that they work on.

still a doctor.

I wouldn't go to a heart surgeon for acne.

wouldn't ask a psychiatrist to look at my eyes.

still doctors.

@approachingmyexpirationdate [c=#BF0000] Dats not the way it works AT ALL 😂😂😂. People who go to med school study for 5-6 years and get a degree which makes them general practitioners which are doctors. And they can further specialize in any field like becoming a paediatrician or heart surgeon etc. BUT dentists study for 4-5 years and don't study the entire body like doctors do and get an entirely different degree in dentistry. Their coursework is less. Then they can specialize in dentistry related fields. So doctors and dentists go down different paths just like engineers and doctors in the sense dat dentists have to study less about the body and more about the teeth during their initial 4-5 years unlike doctors who study the body and nothing about the teeth.

Basically doctors go to med school and dentists go to dentistry school and have a different foundation of study so people doubt if they should call dentists doctors 'cause they don't have the same amount of knowledge a doctor does[/c]

@SW-User I like Dr. Frankenstein and Dr. Jekyll
@SW-User and yet a heart surgeon cant do oral surgery. If you want to get really technical lets not call anybody a doctor because medical care has gotten so specialized that the term doctor is meaningless.

Let's just identify them by specialty.
This one is a nephrologist, this one is a podiatrist. That one over there is an orthopedist.

Same thing with a nurse. One is a cna, another is an rn, etc.

An no i dont claim to know how it all works.

@approachingmyexpirationdate [c=#BF0000]Specialization comes after your initial 5 years. And in those initial years doctors study the whole body while dentists are mainly focused on the teeth so there is ambiguity whether they should call dentists doctors [/c]
@SW-User and lets really confuse the issue and see 8f we should revoke the term for people with an ed. D. Or p.h.d.

The term doctor is a gernerally accepted term and is in common usage.

Now for a less contentious part of our conversation ( i appreciate that we can disagree without name calling)

Who is the "they" that you mentioned. And is there a conversation among medical professionals about it? Inquiring minds do want to know.

@approachingmyexpirationdate [c=#BF0000] People in general. In order to be a doctor you need to have a certain amount of knowledge just like engineers need to have knowledge about engineering and lawyers about law. Now doctors in med school obtain dat knowledge in order to be called doctors and get dat title once they get their degree. Dentists in dentistry school don't obtain as much knowledge a doctor does which is why they graduate early. They do get the title of doctor upon graduation but people doubt whether they should call them proper doctors 'cause of their lack of knowledge about the whole body[/c]
@SW-User i still find the distinction a nonissue. To me it is more a title of respect and indicates their training and ability in their chosen field of study.

Hell i call my pets vet doctor unless they tell me to do otherwise.

But your mileage may vary.

I have long ago demanded that everyone bow to my will. For some reason i kept getting these odd stares when i screamed "off with their heads"

@approachingmyexpirationdate [c=#BF0000]I don't get wut your last statement meant 😂 but yeah it is more like a non issue turned into an issue but I understand where people are coming from if they feel confused whether to call dentists doctors, that's all[/c]
@SW-Userand we've beaten it into the ground - not agreeing - but we haven't drawn any blood so - it's all good

still love ya!
