I'm not American so perhaps I have a clouded view our maybe not being personally involved a better view...
My thoughts are subconsciously there may be a great of revenge over slavery working away, revenge and guilt maybe... But also many uneducated people great that which is different... They have their own small world view and anything that challenges that our promotes change make them uncomfortable
