Free Speach

Something just occurred to me, I'm probably being really slow here that it just occurred to me.

The Internet, this place of information and dangerous in some ways is very destructive of free speach.

You SAY something on a board and a few people or even just one person doesn't like it. They report you. You're banned. Your voice silenced. Their community doesn't have to hear contury statements. It can continue in its haze of its own beliefs.

Years ago I joined a discussion forum for victims of narcissists. Eventually they annoyed me and particularly the "owner" of that group. What happened? I got banned. BUT then the owner of the group somehow got my phone number probably through my ip address and called me and said "hey we can really f with these people" I didn't want to upset the victims, I was trying to point out cirtain things about the group and thought perhaps the owner was using it to abuse people... And he was, and I was annoying people so much he called me to ask me to join in... I did not, I told him he's sick and can f off.

So the moral of that story? Sometimes the person being silenced is the person trying to be on the silencers side, in their own way, I have strange ideas about what's helpful probably.

Anyway it happened to me again on another board and I thought the Internet is in cirtain places the enemy of free Speach. Dunno what I'm going to do about this latest one yet 🤔

... And even here I'm being reminded "don't call people names" what am I supposed to call them? Also what if I have a really horrible photo of a really ugly pet I have that I thinks cute but someone else finds it disgusting so I've broke the "no disgusting images" rule. It's nonsense.

.... And there on lies the whole problem. Who decides what is or isn't allowed?

Sadly we're still too young in the information age to have firmly fixed that. Like you say I report you that's my opinion and then it's the admins on here who decide. However they do have quite good guidance and this seems better than many places to me.

Here's another example that spans the pre and post Internet age.

In 1977 a record shop manager was prosecuted under the obscene publications act I believe. Anyway a long court case considered and decided that bollocks was not obscene esp when referring to something being rubbish as opposed to the male testes. The case refers to the famous Sex Pistols album.

Role forward to today. The Liberal Democrats use the slogan "Bollocks to Brexit". My friend a long term lib dem supporter, ex Councillor, ex parliamentary candidate readily shares that in his social media output. He's been suspended on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram... But in 1977 a court, not you or me, not an admin on here, not twitter, not Facebook etc decided its not offensive.

So.... Bollocks to all this censorship
