Do you blindly believe hearsay?

Example: if a friend tells you that another friend said something not very nice about you, would you assume it to be true or not?
What's your policy when it comes to things like that in your life?

I consider myself "informed" and may have an idea about the situation, but I never believe anything completely one way or another until if and when I see (or don't see) any evidence to back it.
