Old people shouldnt be allowed to drive

Some old man turned in front of me and made me slam on my brakes. I had the right of way

Young people should not be allowed to drive. Last weekend i was traveling at 60 in a 55 when some young woman passed me with oncoming traffic and forced me to the shoulder. She was fortunate to have not killed herself and others....

Both younger drivers and older drivers can be bad drivers. I don't think age has anything to do with it.
MaryWat · 70-79, F
In most jurisdictions, statistics indicate that over 60% of fatal accidents involve drivers under 30, essentially male. If we want to keep death of the roads, it's not hyper cautious 80 years olds that need to be banned, but no males under 30.

Totally unrealistic of course, but until we do, people will still die on the roads

@MaryWat In the European Union more than 25,000 human beings die as a result of traffic accidents each year. Most of them did not sit in a car. Pedestrians, bicycle drivers, children.

@helenS It's an interesting and saddening statistic, but is of no relevance to the statement that "Old people shouldn't be allowed to drive". It is probable that the demographic of the pedestrians and cyclists killed include a disproportionate number of aged people and children. The preventative solution proposed at the head of this discussion would therefore suggest old people and children should be kept off the road! Clearly a 'reductio ad absurdam'

Road casualties are a sad collateral of modern society and a huge population increase. But who wants to go back to 1850.

@MaryWat Yes, I agree absolutely. What I said has nothing to do with age discrimination. In fact I would say that most traffic accidents are caused by self-overestimation by young male drivers.

Older drivers tend to be more careful.

That can be an unfortunate result of old age. I also understand that no longer driving removes some of their sense of freedom. It's a touchy subject. My grandfather refused to stop driving until a magistrate took his licence away.

Middle-aged persons should not be allowed to drive either. Some time ago a middle-aged man overtook me while there was oncoming traffic. He almost forced me to drive into the roadside ditch, with my Vespa.
