The Dunning-Kruger effect. The ability to recognize one's incompetence requires the same skills that would be needed in order to not be incompetent. People don't realize they're stupid because they lack the proper understanding needed in order to not be stupid.

@SW-User I think I said something really rude and that was because I was talking about people who are DESPERATE about their position on the left side of the bellcurve.
They end up denying the situation. Its too much to cope with otherwise.
If you have a different view its because you are very bright already.

@rjc36 Actually they do understand and then they deny it.
They know they can't find a way to learn enough to cover up their stupidity,
so they end up denying it completely.
