I suppose besides the obvious that he was a sick bastard, I think it's the makeup that creeps people out. I myself am not scared of clowns, but I do know people who absolutely abhor them.

@SW-User I went to the circus as a small child and was harassed by a clown wielding a rubber mallet. Scared the piss out of me.
