A woman was getting swamped with calls from strangers.

A billing service had launched an 800 number that was identical to hers.

When she called to complain, she was told to get a new number. "I've had mine for twenty years," she pleaded. "Couldn't you change yours?"

The company refused, so she said, "Fine. From now on, I'm going to tell everyone who calls that their bill is paid in full."

The company got a new number the next day.

I once had a number that was one number off from some big shot at the local chemical plant. I was getting calls all day long from rude people who didn't bother to say hello, they simply said hey get him on the phone, now. Well, we were new in town so the first couple times I tried explaining to the f*ing a-holes they had dialed the wrong number but they insisted I was wrong. So, I decided to play a little game. I politely said one moment please and set the phone down and started playing loud rock music in their ears. Very loud. The calls stopped almost immediately. Imagine that. F*ing hicks.

I did a similar thing with a company called Plastique. I told them that any payments through their company would be refused and they'd have to explain that to the payee. They promptly removed their add-on site.
