What happens to old mining sites?

I'm curious to know what happens to mining sites once their dried up of the resource being mined?

I've found a few companies that do fair trade stones so I feel comfortable about buying semi precious stones or gemstones. It be nice to know they were either replanted or turned into arable land for farming and such.

Perry, Maine has a fascinating rock shop and nearby are the remains of more than 26 mines. They are sort of tourist sites. We went there once, and went to one of the mine tailings, where you are allowed to take anything you find.
