Why does the majority let a small minority control them?

@helenS The problem is the sub groups. Once a political party is in power it often has more trouble with internal factions than the opposing party. Particularly if it only has a slender majority.

@helenS the US voting system is not exactly population based. Trump lost the popular vote, by over 3 million votes. The electoral college, a system used to get acceptance of the new constitution of the new nation in the 18th century, subjected to intense Gerrymanderring, let to his becoming president. The recent election, a landslide for the dems, doesn't change the fact that he sits in the oval office.
