What are imaginary friends like?

I just watched a video saying that as many as 65% of children had an imaginary friend by the time they were 7.
To me that sounds unreal. How does that work? How do you have an imaginary friend? Do you actually see somebody in front of you?

i had imaginary friends from the age of 24 to 27... i could see and speak to them....

@TheCoolestCat Did you consult a doctor about it? Or you thought it was normal and you didn't look much into it? Because I'd probably freak out if I started seeing things that are actually not there.

yea i saw a doctor eventually, they told me i had schizophrenia, and my life went to absolute shit after that.... slowly building this back up again

nah it was pretty frighting, they were evil backstabbing imaginary friends, i still hear them to this day but i dont see them around anymore

@TheCoolestCat Oh damn. Sorry dude, stuff like that frightens me - the hearing voices stuff. I never watch horror movies or X files stuff. I hope you learnt to cope with it, but I just can't read your story, sorry.
