Car? You mean truck or SUV. Other wise it's called all wheel drive.

A vehicle with 4WD should have some sort of controls that allow you to shift into 4WD when needed. All-wheel drive cars, in contrast, don't have any controls for that, as the wheels in AWD turn all the time.

Generally it will have the option to select 4H or 4L or 2H. Most cars and SUV's are AWD, or all wheel drive. 4WD is mainly for some pickup trucks. So, if you have a car or SUV, it is most likely AWD.

There should be a 4wd gear. Also, there is usually a sticker saying the car is a 4wd too
