idk, 1990? I used modems & BBS from about '81, cant remember when the switchover happened for where i was living

@firefall I remember how frustrating it was to get access to the Internet when you weren't at a university or big technology company and there were virtually no ISPs. The Internet at 9600 bps was brutal.

@SW-User 9600bps, luxury! Back in my day, we had to start with 300bps modems. :-)

@firefall Our first modem was a fabulously expensive 1200 bps one that my dad bought as part of one grant or another, but I only used it for BBSes and Usenet. I didn't really get access to the Internet until I first went to university in 1990, but I was using it sporadically before and had netnews and email from Usenet.

@Northwest I started with 1200 bps, but I remember the 300s because they were the cheap obsolete ones by that time.
