When did you first use the internet?

firefall · 61-69, M
idk, 1990? I used modems & BBS from about '81, cant remember when the switchover happened for where i was living
SW-User
@firefall Our first modem was a fabulously expensive 1200 bps one that my dad bought as part of one grant or another, but I only used it for BBSes and Usenet. I didn't really get access to the Internet until I first went to university in 1990, but I was using it sporadically before and had netnews and email from Usenet.
SW-User
@Northwest I started with 1200 bps, but I remember the 300s because they were the cheap obsolete ones by that time.

@SW-User I'm old :-) But I did participate in the development of the networking protocols.

"Back in my day we tied our phones to the wall, and you got the internet from the phone! And it would make a terrible screaming noise..."

"Stop making things up grandpa!"
SW-User
@CountScrofula "and when someone picked up another extension, we'd have to DIAL AGAIN! Course, back in them days it was pulse dialing"
firefall · 61-69, M
@SW-User Pfft, back in my day we had to bang two rocks together to get a connection
abe182 · 46-50, M
Second answer.. My dad had a computer that had an actual telephone for the modem. 1984
SW-User
@abe182 lol I remember those, that was when the phone company wouldn't let you hardwire anything that didn't come from them.
SW-User
@abe182 oh yeah, and you had to dial with the phone dial haha
abe182 · 46-50, M
@SW-User yes the rotary lol
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
Late 80s, I was a kid so can't really specify.

Darpanet. The thing that grew into the Internet. That would be 1980. Full blown email to external parties: 1983. Usenet around 1984.
SW-User
@Northwest remember bang path addresses?
Northwest · M
@SW-User I do recall those. Surprised anyone knows about them :-)

I believe it was around 1992 or 1993.
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
@SW-User I get nostalgic for the pre-graphical internet.
SW-User
@CountScrofula and the pre-spam Internet 😭
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
@SW-User God. The days when people didn't try to sell you things.

I was a late bloomer, about 12 years ago. I was one of those that thought computers were nonsense🙄 and not necessary. Was I wrong.😏
SW-User
I think I first used it in 3rd grade computer lab, in 1999.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
2004? 2005? 2006?, I don't remember the exact year.
nem16 · 36-40, M
2001 was the first time I remember.

Early 80's, AOL.
SailorMoon · 36-40, F
hmm..... 1991 i was smart 3 yo xD
Still4him · 41-45, F
Now you showing our age 😉
1986 or 87..I forget.
The late 90's
Rather late, actually, around 1996. We had computers on the job, but they had specific programs and there was no need to access the internet. And I had no personal computer or “smart phone” at that time. Incredible what a difference about 10 years (1991-2001) made.
DDonde · 31-35, M
I don't remember, I think I was 9? We would go to my Dad's office to check out the internet by going to places like Starwars.com and other mundane sites with just pictures and text. 😅
(This would've been ~1996-1999)
