It's just how English grammar works. If that's not the case and you're actually referring to why some people prefer to be called "they/them" then it's because they want to be referred as somewhere between the two sexes...

@SW-User I'm referring to people calling themselves they/them out of preference. I understand people being trans but wouldn't using he or she work better for them. A MtF trans person would be better off saying she I think rather than they/them as they identify as a woman. Makes more sense to me.

@SW-User it is a mentality. Teens over the West are saying the same stuff and it is not down to grammar at all.
