Because people died so I could, both as a black person and as a woman. Maybe if I were a white man I could afford to be apathetic about it and things would still be okay. But voting is the only thing you have. If the vote wasn’t important people wouldn’t also have fought so hard to keep us from using it.

@bijouxbroussard yes, that's the kind of struggle I was talking about. But let's not kid ourselves that at the moment we have an illusion of democracy
@gol979 I still vote. Because my grandmother couldn’t. And my great uncle was lynched organizing black voters.

@bijouxbroussard none of our votes matter. We can say all we want but they just gonna do what they want no matter what they promise

@bijouxbroussard I'm not saying not to vote and I tip my hat to you and your ancestors, near and distant.
I was merely stating that the two main parties represent corporations not the public. Policy wise you could fit a cigarette paper between them

@SW-User check out Howard zinn
@gol979 There are also policy changes that have occurred in my lifetime because people got involved. So you and crimson can be cynical if you want to. Nothing will or has changed appreciably for you. But quite a bit has changed since I was a child.
It was the reason that Booth assassinated Lincoln. @bijouxbroussard

@bijouxbroussard how can you not be a little cynical when you see fake liberals like Tony bliar, Obama etc wage illegal wars, facilitate the corrupt financial sector, Obama removing 2.8 million migrants.....the list goes on.
I'm not saying that changes for positive cannot happen but it's in spite of these people not because of. It's the people that have made these changes

@gol979 I’m sure she is a little cynical (as am I)....but I would rather use my right to cast a vote for those I think will do a slightly better job than the other than to not vote and let others make that decision for me with no input on my part. I might well be on the side that is outvoted (but they would have been outvoted by a larger margin if people like me didn’t vote).

@DragonFruit I'm not saying not to vote.....see where I'm coming from with my other replies. I was just stating that I can understand his apathy but you need to.be engaged and up to speed to create genuine change
@gol979 Obama was a moderate, not a liberal. That’s the first thing people get wrong, and why the only reason the right wasn’t willing to work with him was because of their racism. If he’d been a white candidate they would’ve found more common ground with him, because he was initially amenable. That was why he used the Romney model for the ACA, rather than just extending Medicare to everyone, similar to NHS in the UK. It was originally a GOP program, and they could’ve help him tweak its flaws so that it worked for everyone. But instead, they turned healthcare into a partisan issue, labeling it “Obamacare” so that their racist constituents would push back. Now people are back going to the ER for healthcare. But in terms of social policies, Obama also supported women’s rights and programs that helped citizens. And regarding illegal immigrants, he followed the law as it stood without needing to demonize people, the way Trump does now. Obama also supported DACA. And under his watch “don’t ask don’t tell” went away and SCOTUS passed Obergfell v Hodges.
