Well, they do call them "comfort foods" for a reason. For most people, the feeling of being full is itself comforting. Add to that the pleasure of the taste, one bite after another of your preferred flavors. I used to love really good homemade macaroni and cheese, for example. Each bite was creamy, cheesy, warm....and comforting for me.
But I can also understand that some people get so stressed and worked up they can't eat. While living at home with my parents, my brother developed an ulcer. Our mother was quite a horror.
