RPGs. Boardgames. Writing. Fictional worldbuilding. TV shows. Reading.

@DunningKruger What are your RPGs of choice?
DunningKruger · 61-69, M
@CountScrofula At the moment, I'm playing in a D&D 5e game, which is OK enough. I'm reading through all the World/Chronicles of Darkness supplements in my collection with the thought of putting something together with that, as I really love contemporary horror/fantasy. I loved Traveller back in the day, but I've been looking hard for a game that's based more on contemporary space opera (Peter Hamilton, Iain Banks, etc.) rather than silver-age. The new version of Vampire: The Masquerade looks appealing mostly because that was the game I actually played the most of in years gone by.

@DunningKruger I love boardgames☺ Seems like most people don't enjoy them as much now that there are video games.

@DunningKruger I mostly play Pathfinder right now because people know it and like it but I feel you for being stuck in the rolling 20 fantasy games forever. I'm running a series of one-shots with another group so doing a Savage Worlds steampunk game before moving to Unknown Armies which is modern occult horror.

For space opera, Traveller is kind of the king. I hear Stars Without Number is good though.

@Caprice Board games are big, big, big right now. Take a look at the YouTube shows like Tabletop, Shut Up and Sit Down and No Pun Included. Great stuff.

@Caprice what he said. They're going through a huge renaissance and there's a major, major industry and scene for them.

@CountScrofula I've been reading through Unknown Armies. I like it a lot, but when I considered whether I wanted to run it, I started thinking about Chronicles of Darkness, which I've always liked. I've played the Savage Worlds version of Space: 1889 a couple times, and I like it well enough. Have you looked at the playtest version of Pathfinder 2? On the one hand, it appeals to my love of system crunch, while on the other hand, it seems far too complex to actually run.

@DunningKruger Unknown Armies is probably my favorite game system, I REALLY recommend it. Savage worlds is an ideal pulp system - it fits best into ludicrous genres that you just embrace wholeheartedly. Also very fast and easy to pick up.

I'm running the playtest right now for PF2. It has some really great ideas and feels good to play. I'd say it is slightly more complicated than 5e, but slightly less complicated than PF 1 while retaining strong character customization.
