The kind with the nylon webbing straps that you tighten by pulling on the end?
Idk why most people where them, but they were actually designed for water sports. A river rafting guide invented them because leather can’t get wet and velcro doesn’t work when it’s wet or dirty. I have a pair for kayaking.

I wear them and i don't force people to lick them so.. no problems yet
