Was I swindled for giving gasoline to this family?

A family came up to me and ask for gas and I said I didn’t have any cash, but they immediately said they didn’t need money. They brought their gas can with them and since they weren’t asking for bills, i let them pump their gas in their can. The mother told me she was an immigrant and she was coming from Los Angeles and needed to go to Sacramento for immigration services because it was too difficult in LA. Her husband doesn’t work and she’s the only one working. It looked like she was going to cry too. She has four kids in her car and spoke very little English. I mean, i probably did get scammed, but i don’t want to believe it. My sister-in-law is an immigrant and has to go to an immigration interview soon, so i thought of her when I thought of this mother. They told me i have a good heart, but whether or not I was scammed, i just would like to help.

Same instance happened a month ago. Family came up to me and had kids in the car. They didn’t ask for gas money and said i could pump it for them. I pumped it, but they told me to stop at $5. The husband said they didn’t want to be greedy because it’s disrespectful, so I said okay, safe travels. Their home was an hour away, so they didn’t want to have a full tank.

I mean neither party asked for money, but even if i was swindled or not, i hope the fuel was put into good use at least.

I've done similar in the past. I do my best to help anyone in need really, if I am able. As far as getting scammed? I look at it this way, I did the right thing. And I sleep well at night knowing it. I think it's wonderful what you are doing.

I think one only really gets swindled when you give money. Giving $5 in actual gas seems quite genuine. You were kind.Just never give money.
A few weeks ago a guy asked me for petrol money, I gave him about $7 in coins.
ten minutes later, I went to the betting shop and there he was placing bets on horses.
you did a kind thing. leave it at that.
What you do affects you, what they do affects them. You are good, in every sense of the word.

On behalf of all who may someday benefit from your kindness being 'paid forward', I thank you.
You have a good heart. Don't worry about being scammed.

I tend to err on the side of helping, especially when it comes to something like giving someone some fuel. I've been asked a couple of times, and I have helped. I have even overheard someone at a gas station whose card was declined on a couple of occasions.
I dont think so because she got gas and she had a car. The ones that come up to me only have the gas can only and their car is, for some reason parked a few blocks away. I know it is bullshit but I give anyway - its not easy these days.
