Why do people believe "white privilege" is a thing?

Because, historically, white people have been masters and black people their slaves and some still seem to hold the warped view that skin colour reflects the value or worthiness of a person. Until a short time ago I believed the world was getting much closer to burying racial discrimination for good but, unfortunately, there seems to have been a move in the opposite direction during the last couple of years and it has become worse again.

@SW-User I'm sure there's a lot of truth in what you say, especially
in the less affluent parts of the world. Anyone with more money seems to carry a higher status with most people in the world and capitalism effectively teaches us through experience that money buys respect and privilege. In the western world I believe racial discrimination has very little to do with resources and more to do with history, and the perception of an inherently racist system, though.
