Iran was in breach of its obligations, voluntarily entered into, under the Non-Proliferation Treaty. It was therefore subject to economic sanctions. Under President Obama the US, together with the other members of the Security Council and Germany, did a deal with Iran under which sanctions were lifted in return for partial and temporary compliance with NPT obligations by Iran. President Trump always said it was a bad deal and had now revoked it. I think he is right, but the other signatories say they will continue to comply with the deal.

@Aliengel Firstly Iran is failing to comply with its obligations under the NPT. Remember that these are not obligations imposed on Iran by anybody else, they are obligations which it wiilingly signed up to when it acceded to the treaty. Secondly, Iran is funding Hamas to attack Israel, and is seeeking to dominate the Middle East at the expense of Saudi Arabia. Whether these things are “wrong” is a matter of opinion, but they are certainly contrary to western interests.
