America gets a lot of heat for its gun laws...

But keep in mind these 2 interesting details...

The USA has one of the longest running constitutional sovereignties the world has ever seen.

Perhaps the check of an armed citizenry has kept the government from running amuck as they tend to do every 100 years or so...

No invading armed force has ever reached our shores since the war of 1812.

Even if the us government infrastructure were to completely fail, any conquering army would have a major issue with completing a campaign with boots on the ground.

You might think these possible scenarios are far and away, but that’s just the point. An armed citizenry keeps these scenarios far and away.

@badapple very good point.. more people per capita have guns in the swiss, but guns isnt a lifestyle there...

usa has a gun culture where people fetishize over their guns
@badapple just to be perverse, gun culture seems to be part of the problem here. Generations of kids playing cowboys and Indians is part of who we are.
Madgirl · 26-30, F
@MistyCee people play cowboy and indian all over the world. but they dont grow up where you can buy guns in a supermarket
@MistyCee @Madgirl no the problem we have here compared to switzerland is the culture. people here dont know how to handle life anymore. more and more people having hate and anger issues. when you have a lot of people with hatred in them and not caring about others youre going to be having problems
@badapple I hear you, but I still think we need to include guns as part of the equation.

Violence is a bigger problem, but gun violence kills more people than fistfights or knife fights.

I'm not saying ban private ownership, but would like to see better enforcement and suffer penalties for negligent entrustment for example.
but car accidents kill more people than guns. want to get rid of cars? the only thing about the news is they promote the bad side of guns. they dont show stories where people protected themselves with it.
Madgirl · 26-30, F
@badapple if cars were invented today they wouldnt be approved and banned
@Madgirl wait what???? why would a car be banned?
Madgirl · 26-30, F
@badapple because they are so dangerous... humans are horrible at driving cars...

soon that wont be a problem though cause of self driving cars
self driving cars are worse. lol. they even killed a person. why would you trust something you have no control over? ex. gps.
Madgirl · 26-30, F
@badapple because they are 100 times safer then a car driven by a human...
lmao. i would never get in one. and no they arent 100 times safer.
@Madgirl @badapple I like the car analogy. Can we require mandatory insurance to register a gun? How about a real licensing procedure, with a test, and an interstate registry that actually works?

How about this? Car manufacturers can get sued if their cars cause deaths. Gun manufacturers are immune by federal law. Can we change this, and let juries decide if a fingerprint lock was a feasible safety measure?

All of these ideas have been shot down by the NRA and the second Amendment folks in the past, and none of them would solve ALL problems, but not considering anything that in any way might reduce the sale of even one gun is counterproductive, IMO.
Madgirl · 26-30, F
you underestimate how many people die from accidently involving cars...

AI cars obviosuly wont be 100% safe.. but they will do a better job then our monkey brains
@MistyCee well guns arent cars. they dont explode causing injury or something like a safty regulation causing an accident like vehicles do. its all about how a person uses it. so the companies cant get sued if people mishandle their products. same for knives or anything for the matter. some kind of finger print lock might be a good idea, especially if the gun has been stolen.
@Madgirl i dont think you understand how many car accidents have been involved from faulty gps. will never trust a vehicle driven by gps and machine.
@badapple You'll hear from folks around here that say finger print locks are a horrible idea, but the bottom line is that, under existing federal law, a gun manufacturer can't be held liable if its product is used by a third party actor and it functioned as intended, i.e., killed someone.

Its still getting kicked around in the courts, because there are some legitimate constitutional issues with respect to state sovereignty and tort law, but there's an ongoing battle over civil liability for firearms manufacturers, because juries tend to hit them hard, and, as much as individuals like having their guns, a big part of the fight is from the industry itself, not to mention the "gun culture."

I'm not in favor of repealing the 2nd amendment or of banning private ownership, but I do think we need to take our blinders off and look at guns as part of our problems and not treat them like they're more important to us than our kids.
yeah industries have a big say in government and what gets passed or whats regulated. why cigarettes are still a thing even though they are terrible for you, addictive and causes cancer to both the user and who ever breathes it around them. as long as people keep lobbying things wont change.
@badapple Yeah, but they have changed, and vaping, notwithstanding, the U.S. has curbed tobacco sales to minors. Tobacco is actually an example of something that has some real similarities to firearms, as well as differences. Both are potential health hazards, both are deeply rooted in our culture and history, and both have highly motivated industries and industry opponents.
yep they do seem to have similarities
