When people say “what’s up” what am I meant to say back?

this isn’t really a common thing to say where I’m from, but I thought it meant “whats wrong?” Or something like that. However people here tend to use it as a greeting and whenever someone says this I find myself thinking, what the hell do I say now?

It's quite a vague thing. Basically it just means "what's on your mind". At that point you're pretty much free to talk about whatever you like, but the most common response is "not much", even if you had the most insane day.

You don't have to say anything. The person asking it generally doesn't care and isn't even really interested. It's just something to say.

I usually assume they're asking me what's going on in my life/what I've been up to lately.
